Just returned from my 2 weeks holiday from Shanghai.

It was freezing….The night we arrived, it was about -2 degree Celsius. Wei Wei and her dad picked Tee and I up from Pudong International Airport. It was good to see Wei Wei after such a long time…

Tee and I are in Shanghai for our holiday as well as to attend the wedding of Eric and Wei Wei. They are having a chinese wedding banquet in China.

It was a culture shock for myself, and to hang out with a Kiwi who looks Chinese but speaks nil chinese…the experience was just awesome!

In summary of my 14 days in Shanghai:-

* Had real Shanghai dumplings
* Took bullet train from Shanghai to Hangzhou
* Cycle around Westlake in Hangzhou for 5 hours in winter cold
* Nearly got knocked down by 2 cars while cycling back to return bikes
* At traffic light junction, you need have to look out for cars, motorcycles and bicycles, they come in all directions, even at green man
* Nearing got spit at while crossing a traffic crossing
* Got chill twice
* Had diarrhoea for 3 days
* Had nose bleed and went to the hospital (minor scare there)
* Made 8 tailored shirts and 3 pairs of pants
* Had food at Food Republic in Metro City
* Miss Chilli and garlic
* Climb 6 flights of stairs to return home (we were staying at Wei’s parents’ apartment on the 6th floor with no lifts)
* Shove my way through in the trains (excellent train system – it is totally accessible to almost everywhere)
* The city has a lot of people
* It is a smoking paradise…you can smoke almost everywhere (including restaurants)
* Took Maglev train to the airport (30 km in 8 mins – average speed 300km/h)
* Witness someone throwing litter out of the windows
* Went to the former residence of Sun Yat Sun
* Went for KTV for only 63 yuan (SGD12.60) for 3 hours. Comes with buffet dinner with food made to order, attached toilet)
* Love Mac, Burger King, KFC, Starbucks

Interesting place to be….it is just so crowded…

I love sunday ….especially on days that I meet Melissa for our Brunch session.

We had brunch at the Wine Company at Evans Road…it was good save for some over toasted bread…as usual…nice ambience …nice music…company is great…Just chilling..

We then head off to the River Market at the Old Parliament House (AKA The Art House). It is supposed to be a flea market. I was expecting a crowd…you know like a flea market in St. Kilda’s in Melbourne, but I was totally wrong. The stalls in the Old Parliament House was ok. The aircon makes it bearable and was attracting some pretty good crowds…

Once you stepped outside in the 33 degrees heat….sorry mate…I am heading in…there were hardly any customers…most of the stalls were not opened….there was totally horrible…SO PATHETIC! I felt so bad for the stall holders so there was really no customers….

There was a few tourists who happen to be passing by, but are toally not interested…they were there for the river rides and sight seeing…

There was even a Tarot reading stall..totally NO business…everyone was in the air-conditioned Art House…

As usual, Melissa and I went to have a cuppa in the cafe at the Art House….sat there for a while…read a little …and then we are off..

As for the River Market…sorry mate…no more next time…too hot…nothing special….no crowd…no vibes…I believe more can be done….

Standing there waiting for the lift, minding my own business…

T walked pass.

(actual conversation in mandarin)

T: Hey (嘿!)
G: Hey (嘿!)
T: Going for a smoke? (去那啊? 抽烟啊?)
G: I don’t smoke (我不抽烟的)
T: I am just joking (哦! 开个玩笑啦!)
G: I do not find it funny (是吗? 一点都不好笑!)

All this time, my face is a dead-pan look with the words on my forehead saying, “Don’t you dare say anything stupid or I will kill.” (我的脸从头到尾是黑的)

That ought to keep him away from talking to me for a few days….

现在想起来还觉的好笑…

grilled red snapper with bacon asparagus wrap
Really enjoyed the gathering tonight…met up with some High School mates, May and Joanne at Maurice and May’s house for dinner.
May really took the effort to cook for us. Since we have not been meeting for 2 years, she decided to cook something that we usually see in Jamie Olivier’s program.
It was excellent…
Played with the children, Mgan and Matthew (You guessed it! everyone’s name in the household starts with M!)
Should have more of these gatherings…so relaxing…

My pet peeve when I take the train to work is when I see people rushing in when the doors of the trains are closing. I never dare to look because all I can see are images of these rushers being cut into half! I know this sounds really morbid but it is really me. Of course i will offer my help but seriously what can you really do with half people? Oh, just ignore me… I am just doing my morning thing!

Had my first session in the gym yesterday. Thought that it is about time that I should committ myself to some kind of exercise routine. Been putting on a lot of weight over last 2 years. Hence, I got to motivate myself to exercise or I would have wasted my money.

Of late, there are so many depressing news in the newspaper. A chinese hostess got hit and run while crossing the road (poor thing had a whole family to support in China), some drunk driver crash into a bus stop causing some injuries, woman got killed by three falling trees while jogging with two friends in the nature reserve, Singaporean army boys in taiwan army storehouse got killed by aged fighter plane returning to base camp. Maybe it is the exams getting to me…one more night and tomorrow evening,
I am home free! Really hope to read more happy news soon…very bad for soul…when it is all simply bad bad news…or i just stop reading evening news for a while…

Today is Mother’s Day.

For many years and till now, I still feel uncomfortable with this occasion. I lost my mother to cancer when I was 16. I have never stayed more than 2 weeks with my parents as I was brought up by grandmother, uncles, aunty and cousins. This day meant nothing to me.

Till a few years ago. I managed to “start celebrating” this day with my aunt. To be fair, my aunt (my father’s sister) was more than any mother to me. She did everything for me as would a mother. For that I am grateful, but there is a psychological barrier within me, a battle. She hinted over the years that she would love to have something for this day (you know, perhaps do something?). For me, I was cold to this so called “Mother’s Day”. If I have lost my natural mother, no one else counts. *bad thinking*

Selina (my best friend) manages to break the curse that I have within me (a lot of scolding helps). So, for a start, I started doing small things, I cook dinner without mentioning the “MD” word. Aunty was very happy. In the years to come, we improved a little. My siblings were somehow not as resistant as me. My sister would volunteer to share in a gift. I was the stubborn one.

I knew this year I would be away busy studying for my exams so I got her a watch 2 weeks earlier. She was overjoyed. Though I still did not mentioned the “MD” word, I just said, “oh, you know, that day is coming. So I thought I would get you something.”

It feels good.

I love buying presents for people. It makes me happy. But to buy something on Mother’s Day for my aunty was something I took years of courage to do. Perhaps, deep within me, I wanted to keep this day special. By sharing it with someone else may subconsciously be betraying my own birth mother? I don’t know.

But, what I know is, when my aunt is happy, I am happy.

Maybe one day, I will wish my aunty without feeling guilty to my mother.

In the meantime, to all mothers…enjoy this beautiful day and may your children love you as you have loved them unconditionally.

Just fall in love with a new song, 老婆 (Wife) from S.H.E’s latest album, Play. It is a song about their friendship. 老婆 is one of the nicknames that they use to address amongst themselves.

The lyrics really touched my heart. I’m sure all of us will have this type of friendship (perhaps, a few times) in our life. This song brings back many wonderful memories when I enjoyed this very close friendship. But this has absolutely nothing to do with unnatural sexual attraction.

My friendship with Selina (nothing to do with the singer of the girl band) is by far, the strongest friendship I have to date.

Though this friendship has somewhat changed because we have very different lives now, she a wife and a mother, and I a swinging single still looking for the other half. We are still very good friends.

You know you have this special bond with your best mate if you can relate to some of these: -

* You cannot stop chatting on the phone, till one of you say, “hey! It is 2 in the morning; I think we better hang up now. Got to work tomorrow.” (If you ask me now what we chat on the phone, I cannot remember…)
* Talk till the cordless phone actually went out of battery and I had to use the normal conventional phone for the next hour or so.
* Chat on the ICQ for hours though she is 10 mins away from my house.
* We had dinners in Serangoon Gardens, walked and chatted till we reached the main road (about 20 mins), sat at the bus stop, chit chat and waited till it was really her last bus before we parted ways.
* Emailing each other almost everyday when she went away for her studies in Queensland.
* Worrying with her, praying with her for her long distance relationship to work
* Advising the guy in question the cheapest way to communicate with her overseas by compiling the list of cheapest calling cards in Singapore.
* Sharing her excitement when she emailed that the guy could be THE ONE. (I still have that email).
* She is the only one who knows my deepest thoughts and secrets. (She has special powers :p)
* She knows what I am thinking by looking at the expression on my face.
* Possibly the only one who has seen me in a dress since my school days.
* She is the only one who has seen my “What I want in a husband” list. Please do not ask me for it, I will not show it to anyone else.
* I failed the paper that I needed to graduate from Uni and was feeling the worst in my life. She got a close circle of friends to compile their love and well wishes into a CD as a Powerpoint and mail it to Melbourne as my BEST Christmas present ever.
* We shared a lot of tears and laughter together.
* She is one of the people I fear most (and she knows it).
* Etc, etc, etc…….

There are simply so much memories but alas, these can only remain in my heart.

Friends, if you are enjoying this very close knitted friendship now, enjoy it treasure it. It will not remain the same forever because lots of things can change as we face different phrases of our life.

Selina and I, we are still very good friends, though we do not do much of the things that we used to do. We built a very good foundation in those few years when we were so carefree, so young in our career, our life. Our friendship is like good wine, it matures and tastes better and better.

For S.H.E, they cemented their friendship into a song. For me, I have this blog.

This week in Singapore, a well-known Singapore actor, C was sentenced to a month jail and fine for drunk driving, hit and run and other related offences. Oh well, I have no comments on his punishment. The thing that I find the most ridiculous was not about him been the headlines in the evening papers but rather in a particular “analysis”.

According to some Feng Shui Masters, C got into this mess was because he changed some Chinese character in his name. Because of that change, he has somehow reversed his good fortune to misfortune. Further his name change has resulted in him being weaker (as in lack of courage). The verdict: He should not change his name.

Hello? If these Feng Shui Masters are so spot on, why did they not alert him of this misfortune that is coming? It is unbelieving to repeat what the judge had said in his commentary for C’s case. Further, if C had his name changed, he must have consulted some Master as well. So apparently, the Master that he consulted did not share the same sentiments with those that the newspaper interviewed.

My verdict: As long as you drink, just don’t drive. If you have a supper craving, cook instant noodles. If you are not quite sober, at least you only burn your own house down (and maybe the neighbours). Nobody said if you drink, don’t cook. Right?

Reply:
Dear Concerned Student:
I am not allowed in schools.
Sincerely,
God
———————————————————-
How did this get started?…
—————–
Let’s see,
I think it started when Madeline Murray O’Hare complained
she didn’t want any prayer in our schools.
And we said, OK..
——————
Then ,
someone said you better not read the Bible in school,
the Bible that says
“thou shalt! not kill,
thou shalt not steal,
and love your neighbors as yourself,”
And we said, OK…
—————–
Dr. Benjamin Spock said
we shouldn’t spank our children
when they misbehaved
because their little personalities
would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem.
And we said,
an expert should know what he’s talking about
so we won’t spank them anymore..
——————
Then someone said
teachers and principals better not
discipline our children when they misbehave.
And the school administrators said
no faculty member in this school
better touch a student when they misbehave
because we don’t want any bad publicity,
and we surely don’t want to be sued.
And we accepted their reasoning…
——————
Then someone said,
let’s let our daughters have abortions if they want,
and they won’t even have to tell their parents.
And we said, that’s a grand idea…
——————
Then some wise school board member said,
since boys will be boys
and they’re going to do it anyway,
let’s give our sons all the condoms they want,
so they can have all the fun they desire,
and we won’t have to tell their parents they got them at school.
And we said, that’s another great idea…
——————
Then some of our top elected officials said
it doesn’t matter what we do in private as long as we do our jobs.
And we said,
it doesn’t matter what anybody,
including the President,
does in private as long as we have jobs and the economy is good….
——————
And someone else took that appreciation a step further
and published pictures of nude children
and then stepped further still by
making them available on the Internet.
And we said, everyone’s entitled to free speech….
——————
And the entertainment industry said,
let’s make TV shows and movies that promote
profanity, violence and illicit sex…
And let’s record music that encourages
rape, drugs, murder, suicide, and satanic themes…
And we said,
it’s just entertainment
and it has no adverse effect
and nobody takes it seriously anyway,
so go right ahead.
——————
Now we’re asking ourselves
why our children have no conscience,
why they don’t know right from wrong,
! and why it doesn’t bother them to
kill strangers, classmates or even themselves.
——————
Undoubtedly,
if we thought about it long and hard enough,
we could figure it out.
I’m sure it has a great deal to do with…
“WE REAP WHAT WE SOW,”

The day the earth moved under my feet!

Today is one day I will never never never forget! If I do, you can smack me!

It was 10 minutes before noon (so looking forward to lunch!), then I miss a step and fall a step back…Oh dear! blood pressure a little too high today?

Then, HY spoke, “Hey, why is our building shaking?”

This time everyone looked up and thought the exact same thing, “Ok, everyone, we are leaving the room, take your bags, take the stairs, we are leaving.”

We run downstairs like what we did with the fire drills…we still have time to ask each other, “So, where do we go from here?”

In Singapore, buildings do not shake! But today they did ….

In my mind, “That’s it! We are reclaiming too much land, the construction all around us and our building is more than 30 years old. Great! We are now really in serious trouble.”

I decided to go across the street and watch, thinking, “If the building was to collapse, standing across the building will be a wiser move.”

Then I saw it! Everyone in the neighbouring buildings are streaming onto the street…

Hold on!

Maybe it is not my building collapsing, it is something BIGGER!

EARTHQUAKE!!!!!

True enough….400 plus km away from Singapore in Sumatra, an earthquake of 6.6 has just occurred

Upon knowing what’s up…decide to go for lunch before returning to the office..

Return the office at about 1.30pm…started working…co-workers starting strolling in….starting chatting about the quake..and then …

IT HAPPENED AGAIN!!!!

The second earthquake measuring 6.3 occurred at about 1.50pm….this time I was seated when I felt the tremors…ok! that’s it! whatever daylight was in me immediately went *poof*

In less than 2 hours, I am going down the same stairs twice…

Decided that that was there….I am going home…

I went for a drink and then left for home…

After calming myself down, I was still able to do some work from home…but occasionally my head feels a little light and found myself going “is it starting again?”

This is definitely a day I will remember for days, years to come…

Found out that my good friend, HL had been watching the same Taiwanese Drama, 花样少年少女 same time as I had. Because of Chinese New Year holidays and not meeting up since she was ill and all, we were updating on what we have been doing and realise that we have been watching the same drama!

I knew that she is a great fan of Japanese Manga, but I did not know that she had bought the DVDs and had finished watching Espiode 1 to 10 in Part I and II of DVDs.

We were happily chatting about the show and its characters that we totally neglected our dear friend, Gilbert, who was so kind to drive us out after church for dinner.

HL said she had to dropped by the DVD shop to collect Part III of the drama! Part III had just arrived in the shop earlier that day, the same day that the last espiode was to be telecast in Taiwan. We got so excited with the buzz that was generated, we decided to dash to the shop to collect Part III.

Heck! when I got there, I had to open my big mouth and went, “do you have a complete set?” There was and 5 mintues later, I was hanging on to my own set of 花样少年少女. Yah!

Finished watching the last espiode and rewatch the entire drama (bit and pieces of it) while at it…

So happy…

They wanted to delivered it on 28 December 2006, but I will be away on holidays and will not get to test it till I am back on the 3rd. The thing with computer is that you got to test it out totally to make sure that it is absolutely working.

So Happy!!!!

Now, I need to name my new notebook.

My first notebook is a NEC named Earl.

Current notebook is a HP named Hurbert.

This new one is a Compaq P. Name…unknown…

Maybe I will call it 无名 (“Wuming” or “Nameless” in chinese) …hahahhaa…

I am so tired..being on my feet since 8am…cooking up a feast..

I had a dinner party today and got some friends over to have dinner with my family.

It has been a while since I cook for a party and what more that it is one that I planned for.

The menu is as follows:-
1) Bee Hoon
2) Curry Chicken (compliments from my aunty)
3) Roast Chicken with my own marinating sauce
4) Mixed vegetables
5) Dumplings
6) mini spring rolls
7) Roast Turket Breast

It was supposed to start at 6pm. But by the time all guest arrived, and re-arranging…dinner starts at 7.30pm.

As usual, Wai Wai is late. But when she came, she make enough jokes and tell enough stories to make up for all of it.

Eliza bought some Ben & Jerry’s ice cream from the petrol station near my house. Melissa brought the wine, which we did not open (We cannot even finish one!)

Overall, it was heaps of fun but very tiring.

“Hey, where are you?”, Alex, my brother asked over the phone.

“In Beach Road. Why?”, I asked

“I have 2 complimentary tickets for Dim Sum Dollies – Little House of Horror, tonight. Are you interested?”

Interested??? I was practically running to the door as I speak.

And off I went…I gave Melissa a call, who happened to be in town and I roped her in to watch the musical with me.

My brother, the photographer has the occassional “lobangs” (deals) from his job’s “occupational hazards” – Free Tickets!

We got great seats (J Row) at the stall in Victoria Theatre. It was lots of fun and I would recommend anyone to go watch it.

Such a busy Saturday!

Went to town to buy a new mobile phone (upgrade) and re-sign the mobile phone contract (more bond). It has been 21 months since I got my K500i and since I can get 30% off if I am on a corporate plan. Heck! I have to change the mobile phone. There is a special promotion for K610im for $98, I simply could not resist it.

I met Sel and Mel at the Singapore Expo for 2 shows, “Intimate Asia 2006″ and “Wine for Asia 2006″. As they were there earlier, they went ahead with the first show and I join them for the Wine show.

The wine show was absolutely fantastic. We pay $10 ($5 off the $15 entrance fees for UOB members) and we get to taste wines from different countries – New Zeland, Australia, Italy, India, France, etc etc etc…

I have done wine tasting in Australia, but this is my first time at a wine fair. With my limited knowledge in wine, I definitely do not want to look stupid. The centre stall was really helpful and we started off our first tasting with French wine. We were each given a glass and about 1/4 to 1/5 of wine poured, we do our tasting.

We would go to the stalls with the glass in one hand and just keep trying and going to the different booths. Most of the folks were so kind and nice, and took effort to explain the different taste, type and this and that. While there were also other who simply glared through you.

Generally, I think wine makes everyone friendly, chatty and jolly. It is not about getting drunk but learning how to appreciate other things in life. As a matter of fact, I did not see any drunken people around. It is simply like a big party going on. We had an awesome time – learning new things, made some new friends, running into old friends, and make me want to become a wine distributor!

I will defintely be catching the next show in 2007.

I have been feeling down recently. Mostly about work. I have been hitted by many disappointments that I feel that is not within my control. I believe that it is a major case of different expections.

Trying to hold it altogether. But I doubt unless something drastically happens, nothing much is going to change.

I have only my holidays to look forward to now.

Finally, I am updating my blog…it has been such a long time…

Now, let me tell you what I have been up to. But since there are quite a number of things that happen since my last update, I would need to consult my trusty PDA for more information…Here goes:

* I attended a course, Public Speaking 101. Now, I am suppose to be all geared up to give speeches. hahahaha…like real…remember it is only 101 (read: Basic). Had heaps of fun coming up with speech, talking about myself (*good for ego*).

* Was the netball team manager. But a manager that knows nuts about the game. After a few months of training, I still don’t get it. We had a competition. Though we lost, we had loads of fun, which I think is more important.

* Entertain Sue Anne when she was in town for a couple of days. The usual – shopping, eating, shopping, eating, shopping, eating…

* Participated in my first auction where we manage to sell load of assets for a really good price. The event was a success. For me, it was a real eye opener.

* My Jap friend was in town. So, I hang out with her for a bit.

* Attended WOMAD (World of Music Arts and Dance) at the Fort Canning Park. It was awesome. My first time there. The music was great. But the heat really get to me. At the end, I could not stay on for the late party at the Tunnel because the only thing I could think of was my comfy bed.

* Went to a lovely resort in JB, Malaysia, for a company event. It was a team building cum Dinner & Dance. We left on Friday morning and return on Saturday evening. It was loads of fun. But totally detrimental to the body. I think I will fill you in on a separate blog posting for this event. When I came back on Saturday evening, I was supposed to rest for a while and got for church service. I was also supposed to hang out with Elisa, as she was leaving for Canada for a 4 months break. In the end, my body screamed when I try to move an inch. So, I could not join the gals to play pool that night (*sad*).

* Went for a Singapore biennale with Melissa and Selvi. We headed to PS Cafe for brunch and guess who I met there? I ran into Elisa and Wai at the Cafe. I did not meet them the night before (See above) because I was totally crashed after the trip in JB. Fancy running into them in such an “ulu” (remote part, only trees and trees. It is not very accessible by public transport). We are happy to see each other, and we did the most practical thing – we sat with our own friends. Hahahha…So, I only met them but did not catch up with them.

After Brunch, we went for the art exhibition. Some of the installations are really thought provoking, but some are rather disturbing. I saw one that showed the chopping of Barbie doll by an expressionless man. I have yet to understand what was the intended meaning. I think we had more fun taking photos of one another, striking various poses and sitting on the Hammocks.

* Following week, I went to Art Singapore. Melissa has free tickets since she volunteer for the Singapore Biennale. This is where the art galleries in Asia gather to showcase their art works. You are free to buy them if you like them. My favourite art piece costs S$1,668. I think I will get my notebook first. The art piece can wait.

Well…I hope this update will be enough to keep you informed what has been happening to me since August…

Catch you later.

It is as if it never happened though I had a great time there with my church mates who were there for business trip and holidays. Met up with the gals, who will be making a trip to Singapore in the 1st week of September..yay! Can play tour guide again…

Thinking of going up again in December to meet up with some folks.

Or should I go somewhere else? Mmmm….

I am losing interest to write on my blog. Either nothing special is happening in my life or simply because I do not have any inspiration to write.

Then again, I am too attached to my blog to shut it down.

Perhaps I will find some time to change the skin of the blog, sort of a renewal process.

But most importantly, I need visitors. If no one leave notes and I am constantly here by myself, it will get so boring…
